RESEARCH

The international research group Film und Theology arises from the cooperation between researchers in theology and religious studies affiliated with various European universities and other institutions.

Aiming at exploring the relationship between religion, film and media, it develops research in a mutual exchange with film and media studies as well as with other fields interested in film, such as the study of literature, philosophy and psychology. In addition, the dialogue with film producers plays an important role. The diverse academic fields of its members and hermeneutical reflections have contributed to the plurality of methodologies. The interaction between different approaches leads to an open, dynamic and creative exchange.

The results of the work of the international research group are presented to both an academic audience and church institutions and a broader public interested in film.
Members of the research group often serve in ecumenical or interreligious juries and broaden their network including film festivals and industry.

The international research group Film und Theologie meets twice a year. The annual meeting, held in spring, focuses on a specific topic, and a workshop in January is dedicated to methodological reflections.
These conferences are public. Their results are published in the book series Religion, Film and Media.
